TheBadger Anti-Racist Coalition (BARC) is a group of community engagement professionals at University of Wisconsin-Madison who advocate and agitate for concrete actions supporting racial justice and equity. Members of BARC were interviewed in February 2024.
BARC developed an experiential rubric that facilitates self-assessment, reflection and action toward anti-racist practices on campus. The rubric includes 12 common university domains where racist values are commonly embedded: funding, curriculum, policy, facilities, etc. As more stakeholders are using or expressing interest in the rubric, BARC members have shifted their focus from initial outreach to follow-up with curious individuals. They track inquiries and invite feedback for strengthening the rubric and for sharing successful activities with others. BARC has involved diverse stakeholders, high level executive leaders as well as staff ‘on the ground‘ in a significant step toward fostering meaningful partnerships as well as more substantive change at UW.
The BARC rubric does not offer solutions to all types of oppression and cannot serve as the sole tool for addressing organizational change related to diversity, equity, and inclusion values.
As I found this tool helpful for engaging people in deeper conversations, I also see its great potential for other institutions to adopt. The ‘Prompts’ questions in the rubric encourage users to reflect on their current position and context, while also providing options for envisioning necessary change.
BARC members’ practice in this field has exerted a significant impact on campus, earning the attention and support of central campus administration (human resources, DDEEA, etc). Discomfort while in the process of applying the rubric is anticipated and acknowledged, however the rubric provides pathways to push past reflection to spur actions.
